Ugh.   Where to start…

My darling bunny Kosh is 5 ½ years old.  He hasn’t been eating as much lately, but was still himself and excited for food.

Last Tuesday night he was fine and was hopping around the house.

Wednesday night I saw that he hadn’t drank any water (and he’s usually a water drinking fiend), hadn’t eaten, and was laying listless and hardly moving.  Needless to say, I was frantic.  Thursday morning he wasn’t any better and just lay there, breathing shallowly (still not eating or drinking).  I (between sobs) called the  vet and my husband and I took him in.

The vet said he didn’t seem to have any blockages and that his stomach and bladder were empty.  He said he had GI staisis which he said happened sometimes in rabbits.   He said he was dehydrated (obviously) so he gave Kosh a shot of fluids, Reglan to encourage eating, and a shot of the antibiotic Baytril.  He said we should feed him vegetable baby food with a syringe four times a day and gave us an antibiotic, Bactrim, to give him morning and night.

He gave him some of the baby food and we took Kosh home.  After a bit he seemed more alert (more than he had been anyway), which I imagine was caused by finally having a bit of food/liquid.  That was Thursday.

Friday he still hadn’t eaten (we are still continuing with the baby food) or drank (although I know there is fluid in the baby food).   He was pooping more (although it isn’t regular pellet poop but is soft, probably because he isn’t eating fiber/hay).  Once on Friday I saw that one if his poops had what seemed like a string of a clear jelly like substance.  On Saturday (still no eating/drinking) he started pooping with all this jelly like mucous.  I looked up his symptoms last night and found that they seemed to pretty much exactly match mucoid enteritis.  One of the things that was recommended on a post somewhere was Simethecone for gas (which I read could be a reason why he wouldn’t eat).  We got some and gave him two doses last night and one this morning.  He still hasn’t eaten/drank, and now this morning when I cleaned off the towel he was laying on had a bunch of soft poops in a bunch of clear mucous.

I’m really worried about him and wish it weren’t a freaking holiday weekend so I could take him back to the vet.  I’m about to give him another dose of baby food now.

Does anyone have any advice?  I’m really worried about Kosh.
