So there's a discussion going on in the stupidpetowners community about a picture of a kitte and a bird. People are saying it's stupid because cat saliva is toxic to birds as it contains pasteurella.

I know most rabbits carry the pasteurella bacteria, even if they're not infected with it.

So are rabbits toxic to birds too? Anyone know?

I ask as someone who adores both species and one day plans to have parrots. I'd hate to do it just to find out the one is going to kill the other.

Mickey had his vet appointment this morning. The vet checked him out, gave him some fluids and made a few suggestions:

1. Cut back on his greens a little to encourage him to eat more hay.

2. If he still won't touch hay, try some different hays to see if he'll eat any of them.

3. Give him pineapple juice twice a day to up his fluid intake and hopefully dissolve any blockage that's there.

She said if there's no improvement, I should bring him back in for an x-ray; she would have liked to do one today, but their machine is in repairs.

I brought in a poop sample for her to see, but while I was waiting for him to get the fluids, I noticed he'd pooped some in his carrier, and that those poops were a little bigger than what he's been doing. Looks like the hay he'd eaten yesterday did make an impact, so I'm definitely going to cut back on his greens and see if that gets him eating more hay. I also picked up some pineapple juice at the store after I brought Mickey home, so I'll start him on that tonight.

The vet also recommended that I keep some Critical Care on hand in case I need to get more fluids into his system. It's something I've been meaning to order because it's good to have in case of emergency, so that's next on the priority list.

At the moment, Mickey is zoned out in his cage. He ate a little bit of hay when he first got home, but hasn't shown much interest in eating since then. That's normal for him after a vet visit; he'll give me the Dread Glare of Sulk for a while, then he'll take a nap and then all is usually well. We'll see how it goes after I'm trying to syringe pineapple juice into him later, though.

Awwww

Pepper had a wonderful weekend - lots of people came to visit her!

(Technicaly it was my house-swarming party, but clearly I was not the main attraction).

There were gift bags to toss and tissue paper to nibble!

She sniffed everyone,

and even did some binkies to show off! She had so much fun running around with everyone that she was conked out asleep under the bed by 6:30 and didn't even wake up when the pizza came!

She clearly approves of the new furniture arrangement, as there have been many happy bunny dances over the past few days.

But my favorite is that she now goes to bed with me! Granted, not ON the bed - she'll never be a snugglebun. But she clearly enjoys my company. When I'm on the couch, she's usually hanging around the living room somewhere. When I turn out the lights to go to bed, she usually heads for the kitchen - to get a drink before bed maybe? Then once I go to bed, she comes in, scrabbles around under the bed for a little while and then presumably goes to sleep.

I happened to mention to Mickey last night that he would be going to the vet's on Wed. because of his tummy issues. I just got home from food shopping a short time ago, and he's sitting in his hay box, munching on hay like there's no tomorrow--and this is the rabbit who never eats hay. Who says rabbits don't understand our language? ;D

Малышок ушастик жив =) подкармливали козьим молоком, сегодня даже к мамке присосался. Не подскажете через какой промежуток времени его кормить надо?
А ещё он такой бодренький =)))))

@темы: крольчата

I'm torn and could use some advice.  My partner and I are getting two white english angora bucks later this month. We are all prepared and have purchased a large 6'x6'x4' enclosure for them, tons of toys, litter boxes, etc. We're just waiting for them to get old enough to bring them home.

This morning, the woman emailed us to tell us about a 3rd littermate. She said that she has noticed that they are particularly bonded, and wanted to know if we'd like the third as well. It's not just a generous offer, there's a hefty fee that goes along with it. While we were initally very happy with the farm where the boys were raised, the woman increasingly seems to be very money driven. For instance, she offered to sell us bags of bedding for $20 while being very evasive about the brand she was using, although she stressed how important it is to keep their bedding/food, etc consistant, "for their sake." We figured out, though, that it's equine pine, which we can get for $7/bag at the nearby feed store.

So part of me feels like she's playing up to our emotions by telling us that they're bonded, that they play and snuggle together, but really she hasn't found a home for him, and is trying to make more money off of us. But I still feel bad for the bunny, and would really hate to separate bunnies that are bonded to each other.

And what about three versus two buns? All will be neutered and will get plenty of roaming time in the evenings and when we're home, but is the enclosure (36 sq feet of floor space) big enough for them to share? I haven't owned rabbits before, but I want to make sure that I'm doing everything I can for them. Please help!

So Leo is shedding LIKE CRAZY. I can't even pet him without my hand getting covered in fur!

Is this the time of year when bunnies shed this much? I'm starting to get a little worried, especially since Leo's such an avid groomer.

I've been brushing him daily but nothing I do seems to be enough! IT KEEPS COMING OUT. D:

Help?

Don't wake up the cranky old man ;D

Success!

So I finally managed to get a vet with experience who will spay my bun. I just had to explain that in the states it was normal to spay female rabbits because of false pregnancies, cancer, and so on. There was a brief talk with the doctor and eventually he said "Ja, gut." Her appointment is on the 26th. Hopefully all will be well until then. Maybe I can even get the vet to cut her nails before the big appointment (= I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for your advice!

Надеюсь оно поднимет Вам настроение )

@темы: видео, интересно и смешно

hey guys,
i've been feeding my rabbits kaytee timothy complete for years now (they are always very excited to eat it). the other night i bought a bag from the local grocer and brought it home, and they haven't been eating it!
they seem very excited to eat, then, after putting their noses in it, go elsewhere to eat hay or greens.
is it possible there's something wrong with that particular bag of food? i can't seem to explain it, they seem hungry, but want nothing to do with it.
anyone ever have any trouble with "bad" pellets? the appetite is still obviously there, they just don't want the pellets.

anyhow,
thanks for the help if any.

I realize this is my second post today... but bear with me here..

My partner and I are trying to get our older (4yrs or so) adopted bunny to lose some weight (he's not seriously overweight, just a bit pudgy).  His diet is controlled, he has only 1/4 cup of timothy based pellets, about a cup of veggies a day (usually broccoli, with a bit of celery.  He gets carrot, apple, banana, mango, and spinach once in a while as treats), and all the hay and water he wants, so we figure that he's just not exercising enough.  He has plenty of access to outside of his cage ( basically, if we're home the doors are open), but he tends to hang out and rest most of the time.  Again, he has access to plenty of toss toys, chew toys, balls, etc, but he just doesn't seem too interested.  Does anyone have any advice on how to get him to play more?

So my little dutchie, Peppermint, has these strange hard bumbs under his fur. They don't seem to be very sore because I've touched them and he didn't flinch in pain. I am bringing him to the vet this thrusday regardless, but I'm wondering what these could be. He cohabitates with another fixed male, Slingshot, but they don't ever fight (just love each other), and they don't have fleas because I checked that. He has three of these bumbs I've noticed, one on his back one on his side, and one near his sholders. Does anyone have any idea what these could be?

Arthur got a little jealous of all the camera time Beth was getting.....

I'll post an update on the bonding with Arthur soon - long story short, we have moments or fighting and moments of love but mostly wary glances and sniffing.

My partner and I recently adopted Ophelia, a lop-mix of some kind, from our local Humane Society.  We've been bunny parents to another rescue bunny, Wolfgang (a hoto-dutch cross) for about a year, and decided to adopt him a companion.  Anyways, a few days ago we noticed that Ophelia had been quite lethargic, and that she was eating but had basically quit chewing. The four of us visited the vet yesterday, and it turns out Opehlia had an overgrown molar (likely already overgrown when she was taken to the humane society) that needed trimming and a cracked tooth (same story) that needed pulling.  She's doing wonderfully, but we're having some trouble syringe feeding her (she isn't quite eating enough on her own yet, just nibbling at some food every once in a while).  We've tried mushing up veggies and a few pellets, just her pellets and water, and a pellet/apple mix, and nothing seems to work.  Has anyone else had to force-feed a picky eater?  Any advice?
(there is a special powder that we can buy from the vet if we're unable to get her to eat, but after spending $350.00 on hery surgery and meds we're trying to avoid this as we're both students)

Thanks in advance!

I thought I would post some great news for bunnies!  By early 2009, Petco will no longer sell rabbits in their stores!  Instead they will be working strictly with bunny rescues and shelters to help adopt bunnies out!  :D

My oldest bunny Boo (in userpic) will be turning 6 this spring. Lately he's lost a bit of weight and although he's always been a clumsy bunny, he's been falling over more than in the past. I'm not sure if it's age or something else. He has a vet appointment on Wednesday to check his health, but until then I'm looking for a good way to fatten him up. His appetite is still good but I'm wondering if his cage-mate Peeka is eating all the food before he can, so tonight he'll be put into his own cage for a couple of days. I want to give him some special food, perhaps critical care powder mixed with bananas. Anyone have other ideas/suggestions? Thanks!
