So I've had my new bun Bandita for almost 2 weeks now. She seems to be warming up to me a bit and will let me hold her from time to time. So far, I've been letting her run around the hallway 30 min to 3 hours a day, with me sitting alongside for company. Her behavior towards me seems to change on a by the minute basis, but in general she seems somewhat scared of me (as well as everything else). I guess she's just trying to "figure me out" and get used to her new environment. I've looked at a lot of sites about how to raise a happy, independent bunny and many of them seem to indicate you should leave the cage door open so the rabbit can come in and out as she pleases. Bandita will sometimes come out on her own but lately she hasn't and after several hours of leaving the cage door open I'll usually pick her up, pet her, and put her down. Then she will happily play for about an hour or so. My question is: am I allowing her enough time? Space? We have a lot of wires in the house and so I don't want to present her with any health hazards, but I have been thinking about bunny proofing the living room so she can frolic around in there too. We have hardwood floors so I've been so far putting blankets down so she doesn't slip n' slide. I'm not sure how this would work for the living room as it is also hardwood. Should I avoid picking her up out of the cage completely? Also, I can't tell if she likes being held but at the moment she seems to be somewhat afraid of it too (although she'll generally let me hold her / pet her for 10 min. or so before hopping off). I want her to get used to being held and read in many places that if you hold bunnies more and more little by little they'll get used to it. Has this been your experience? Do you know of anything else that might help make her more at ease? Thanks in advance for the advice!!!
