Is it okay for me to feed my bunny dried figs?
She just had a tiny nibble from a piece I was eating and she went crazy for it!
I just want to make sure before I allow her to have any more.
Thankyou bunnylovers ♥

Just out of interest - What/when do you feed your Bunnies each day?
& They're favourite vegetables? Mine's a fussy little bun, & I'm slowly trying out as many types of veg as I can but he turns his little nose up at most!
Thanks

Heya,
I know this isn't technically on topic but I'm trying to get the word out and we all love the buns - yes?
I'd thought I would post this here as my clinic is trying to find a home for a special needs rabbit. This rabbit is a very special case and possibly has a rare condition called Situs inversus. A ultrasound seems to confirm that his organs are flipflopped. The main problem with him seems to be respiratory and he needs to be nebulized twice daily which makes sense as Situs inversus causes the cilia of the lungs to flow backwards. He would need a nebulizer and nebuilizing solution regularly and possibly ongoing medical care.
Other than that, he's possibly one of the friendliest bunnies I've ever met. He's neutered and playful, tossing around his many toys. I dearly love this rabbit - I would adopt him in a second if I had somewhere to nebulize and wasn't full to capacity with rescue animals already. His name is Willy for now.
Here's a picture of the little scoundrel:

I'm located in Monterey, CA but I would be willing to drive to deliver him to the right home. My clinic is hoping to keep him somewhere in a few hours radius as we're hoping to necropsy him when he does pass in order to confirm this rare condition.
Anyway, hit me back if you are intrested in discussing this possibility.

hi
my name's holli. i have a 2 yr old mini rex named honey. he is a boy, despite the name. before i had him i didn't know that boy bunnies have um..big thingamajigs just like boy dogs do i didn't bother to flip him over when i bought him haha. i also have a dutch rabbit named bugs. i'm not sure how old he is, my boyfriend and i took him from a friend. they didn't have enough time to pay much attention to him so we took him
i posted these questions in
bunnyowners, i hope it's ok to ask here, too! i'd been meaning to join this community, anyway.
i read through the memories and got a little bit of information, but i'd still like more opinions. my honey bunny is a very picky eater. the only veggies he will eat are parsley, cilantro, radicchio, i think he's eaten kale before..and other varieties of green leefy veggies. but he won't touch hay. i've had him for two years and when i first got him he would eat hay but then he stopped eating it. i've tried timothy and alfalfa, which are really the only kinds i've seen around here. i hadn't started reading bunny forums until recently so i didn't think it was a problem :/ what i've read is that if he's hungry, he'll eventually eat whatever i give him. is this true, and are there any other ways to get him to eat hay? i give him pellets and greens daily, and a little bit of fruit. he's healthy and doesn't seem to have gas or any other digestive problems. my rabbit Bugs, on the other hand, will eat anything in sight-snow peas, carrots, radishes, brocoli..so how can i get my honey bunny to do the same?
also, what safe options do i have regarding getting rid of gnats? i've never had this problem before, i don't know if it's because of the weather or what. i don't want to spray anything that will hurt my bunny. i just read this and it's got me really worried
does this apply to gnats, too? thank you guys for any advice, i greatly appreciate it.

Okay, so sorry for all the questions but I'm new to this (= So I've been letting Bandita gradually work up to having free range over her room all the time. BUT she still isn't using the litter box for either #1 or #2 (I know this will get better when she is neutered but is there anything I can do in the meantime?) and today I discovered she has been chewing chunks out of the walls!!! This includes the stucco and the paint which I KNOW can't be good for her... I'm really perplexed here. Anyone have any ideas? She mainly chews this one corner of the wall where there is a tiny nook. A baby gate wouldn't fit it and I don't know what else I could put there that she wouldn't just gnaw right through or push aside... I think I'm going to go the safe route and just going to keep her inside until I can figure something out )=

This has been such a long weekend and day for me.
I noticed that on Saturday Rachel was acting a bit lethargic and didn't want to eat her pellets in the morning. So i keep watching her throughout the day. When i brought her, Brighton, and Essy up to my room for bonding time she was still acting that way. So i picked her up and checked her out and initially didn't see anything obviously wrong. I put her down and she tripped and it scared me to death. I knew she she tripped that something was wrong with her. She was eating hay and drinking water so i left her alone for the rest of the day.
Sunday, she was still acting the same way and she looked like her head was tilting a little to the right. I immediately freaked out. I didn't have the money to take her to an emergency vet so i watched her all day. I made sure she ate some hay and drank lots of water.
Today i got up at 7:50am to call the vet right away. I called my normal bunny vet and told them i only have $80's right now will that cover everything she needs done. The receptionist told me that since i've been there before i could what i have now and pay the rest later ( I told them i was getting my finical aid refund in 2-4 more weeks). My first thought was why couldn't they do this for me with Taby. I decided to drop that thought and take what i could get. I noticed when i went to get Rachel this morning she was more active, but i wasn't taking a chance.
I also noticed when i went to get Rachel that Beka and Leah seemed to be missing form their pen. Sure enough as soon as i thought that i see Leah darting in front of me and squeezing herself into a hole she and beka ( I knew Mary was too lazy to do such a thing) had made in their pen. I then had to go catch Beka. I currently have a table in front of their hole until i can get some wood to cover it up.
Rachel's appointment was at 10:50am this morning. I had a new vet that was really nice. She checked Rachel's teeth and they were fine. She checked her breathing and it was fine as well. She noticed when she checked Rachel's right ear that she had a tiny ear infection. She also heard what i was talking about Rachel's snotty nose sound when she went to check her under belly. The vet gave me some strawberry flavored medicine that i have to give her twice a day. I'm also supposed to give her some pineapple juice to make her system move from not eating like she normally does. The vet also told me she'll call me in a couple of days to see how Rachel is.
So $64 dollars later i'm out of the vet. I'm wondering how long does it take for anyone's rabbit to get back to normal after they start medication? This is the first time i've had a sick bunny. I've had injured buns but never sick ones. Rachel is eating hay, but nothing else right now and that concerns me.

i'm sure someone will remember this picture :P
I've been kind of freaked out discovering two flesh lumps on Spawn's tummy next to the bunnie's genitalia. My first suspicion was our little girl was a LITTLE BOY - but I tried to look up pictures on line and the BEST I got was photos from some surgeries and they said those were scent glands. (I was like "...ookaaayyy.") I also called the person I got the bunny from and she re-assured me the rabbit was indeed a 1-year-old female.
So, Sunday my bf and I took Spawn to the vet - and lo and behold, Spawn IS a little boy. In fact, I got him when he was a BABY - under 2 months old (or so the vet said) because we only had Spawn for about two months and I have SEEN his tummy before and his testicles weren't as pronounced. (because they dropped about a week ago) So, the vet says Spawn is LIKELY to be between four and six months old.
I was INFURIATED. Not because of my bunnie, but because of things that it meant. My friend insisted that the guy she HAD the rabbit from "caught" (or had Spawn and couldn't keep him any more) so they knew the rabbit's gender and age. But now, I'm afraid that the guy who brought the bunny over is ACTUALLY BREEDING them. I mean HOW else are you going to get your hands on two month old rabbit that was pearly white, despite the claim of being "caught" running outside. The vet said I should keep on treating the rabbit the way I was because Spawn was perfectly healthy. *knocks on wood*
I'm planning on calling my friend and telling her to YELL at the guy who gave us the rabbit. -____-. How can people be this irresponsible?

To those of you still concerned about the bunny I posted about on Thursday, he passed away on Friday [the 19th]. He was older [we think around 6+] and had mediocre care at best for most of his life. His system was probably too overwhelmed to handle it any longer. According to his owners, he was much happier since his trip to the vet.
Rest in peace, little Stewie.
Rest in peace, little Stewie.
The reason I've been researching rabbits so thoroughly is because a friend of mine (actually, my SO's sister, so my quasi-sister-in-law, which makes the situation worse, as you see) just got a mini-lop. I'm afraid it just was NOT a good idea for her.
Just to make it clearer, she calls it a lhasa apso. Which, for those of you are bunny people only, is a breed of dog. Unless I'm missing something and it's a breed of rabbit, too. Anyway, she has a Rhodesian Ridgeback/Pit mix, and a Greyhound/Pit mix. Both are highly excitable dogs who only listen when they heard your tone change from calm to angry, aka, threatened. This sort of "obedience" is NOT favorable when trying to introduce something new to a dog (say, a rabbit, or an infant) so I can't imagine they're not going to try to eat this poor mini-lop that she brought home. The rabbit is now in a standing cage in the basement, and on its first night home my SIL seemed resigned to settle with the fact that she would not be able to socialize the dogs to the rabbit and that the rabbit would be spending 99% of its time running around the basement ---- alone.
SO, that said, I'm researching now on them (even though I want to get a large breed, much later, after my boyfriend brings a dog into his house), JUST IN CASE she realizes she's made a terrible mistake and wants to get rid of the rabbit. If that happens, I'm snatching it immediately. **
ANYWAY, my questions are for the larger breeds (I'm thinking Flemish Giant, mix thereof, they seem calmer AND SO DAMN CUTE).
For The Larger Breeds (Specifically Flemish Giants)
1) I found a website that indicated the pellets they eat are roughly 1oz per 5lbs of pet at (if that's wrong, correct me! I haven't looked at any printed text for them yet), so by my calculation a larger breed of rabbit would be eating $60 (generous estimate) of pellets per month, plus hay, and the fresh fruits/veggies (1 cup per 5lbs is what I found. That seems like a lot!) I know larger breeds eat more - how much more? What do you generally spend a month on pellets? And hay?
2) Do you find these breeds are harder or easier to train (litter or otherwise) than smaller ones? What are the main differences?
3) If I found a mix in a shelter, is it safe to say that any mix with a Flemish Giant will be a BIG BUNNEH? >D I ask because I'd rather save one than purchase one from a breeder, but am not willing to purchase one from a pet store if I cannot find one I want in a shelter. Sorry.
General Rabbit Questions
1) Are there places where you can buy pellets and hay in BULK, for cheap? Does it "go bad" if you buy too much at once? The hay has nutritional value, so I don't know if that means it can "spoil." How much do you spend a month for pellets? For hay?
2) For those who live on a coast (I live in NJ, it seems coastal cities charge more for vet care -- b/c the people will pay it), how much is a regular vet-visit for you? Would you say that regular visits, for whatever reason, keeps to under $150? I know in some places they are 'exotic' pets.... so were my rats! And I had to diagnose because the vet I brought my rats to had never treated a rat before (still got charged $70 for each of them, though, just to come into the office!), and she didn't even know much invermectin(sp) to give him. I had to give her my own suggestion and she researched it there.
3) Do they respond to command words, like dogs, or is it more of a gesture/body language thing?
4) Would you say they develop more health problems than other pets? Or roughly the same, just different problems exclusive to rabbits? What I mean is.. dogs generally need to go to the vet for stomach problems, mostly, as well as the other maintenance stuff. If they develop a disease its not COMMON. Same for rabbits?
** Also, before you attack me for not chastising/reprimanding/beating my SO's sister-in-law, please understand that this woman is not even family to me. It would be very awkward and uncomfortable for me to just start yelling at her. She has the fact that in childhood, her sister had a rabbit ( "My sister didn't fix her rabbits, I'm not going to fix her! "
behind her; I never owned a rabbit, so my input would not be taken openly. I've already informed her about the fact that they should not eat lettuce, need X amt of space, can be litter trained, etc, etc, but it's NOT MY PLACE to berate her for bringing a rabbit into a stupid situation like this. Her husband, my boyfriend's brother, would not appreciate it, and it might create tension that, while I am concerned about the rabbit!, I do not want to deal with. Should the situation be so perilous as to endanger the rabbit, I will most certainly say something to her, but I cannot start nitpicking her or I'll be cast out, and the rabbit will be worse off than before when my friendly input can be considered.
For hay?

I'm out of town and left my rabbit with my sister. All is well, she said, except he stopped using his litter box and is peeing on the floor instead. Why is he doing this? How do I get him to start using his box again?
I don't think he's rebelling because he's unhappy. She said he's been doing binkies and has even made friends with her cat.

I have a tiny wild rabbit I'm fostering right now through my work. (I work at an SPCA.) And I have managed to tame a wild rabbit before (my baby boy, Syd.. who isn't actually a baby anymore!) But he is only attached to me, and afraid of all other people.
This foster-bunny (nicknamed 'Vegas,' for now) definitely has a domestic breed in her as she is pure black, not a dot of any other colour on her. I believe her to be 4-5 weeks old, she seems to be eating fine on her own... but really is just terrified of humans. She pees when I pick her up, and flattens herself when I walk by the cage. She has improved enough that I can pat her without her dashing to the other side of the cage, which is a big improvement seeing as I've only had her for a couple of days.
I was just wondering if there was anything like rescue remedy which I've used with shy cats and dogs before for rabbits... or does anyone know if you can use the same thing with rabbits? It does wonders for the cats here... but no-one I've spoken here knows if we can use it on rabbits too.
Or any other tips..... and don't worry photos will be up tonight when I get home.
She is rather adorable!

but do rabbits menstruate? I hadn't thought so, but...
I noticed blood (definetly blood, not the orangey discoloration from a betta carotene diet) in my adult girl's litter tray this arvo. Picked her up for inspection and she seemed to have some dried blood on her nether regions.
Note: she is over a year old and not spayed (bad, I know, but I am terrified of taking my rabbits to any vet after what happened with my first one). She is acting normal and healthy, besides. Not even any signs of attempting to nest or a false pregnancy.
Should I be worried?
