Heylo!

Hi!

I don't own a rabbit but I've been thinking of getting one for some time now. Preferably adopting one and not purchasing, or at least one from a reputable breeder and not a pet store. I'm interested in the larger breeds. I have a few friends who have twenty-pounders, if not heavier, and that's just adorable! Please excuse my ignorance and don't attack me for not knowing everything about them - I'm still learning! I'm aware of this website: www.rabbit.org , but I'm looking more for a "IS A RABBIT RIGHT FOR YOU?" sort of tutorial/article. Or, if anyone here would like to ask me questions, that's fine too.

My general mode of approach when getting a new animal (I used to have rats, and I read about them for almost 7 months before getting them) is to research thoroughly and then decide if I'm willing to give it the best care or if I can. That said, right now all I know is that they need good food, room, can be litter trained, and are at times affectionate.

I would love to get a larger rabbit, as I've said (I also know they should be fixed), but my boyfriend - who, ah, owns the house - wants to get dogs. I know people in this community (and in real life) have both, and they say the dogs play. Is this something I can hope to achieve? Should one animal be in the house before the other? Etc, etc.

Thank you for any info you can provide.

Edit: After some back reading I'm on this site: language.rabbitspeak.com/rabbittalk.html and I am dying of laughter. Is all this TRUE? LOL

Fleas.

Hi,
My fiance and I got some fleas in here yesterday. We live in an apartment. I have two rabbits. I need to figure out what I can use on them to get rid of them. i also read a thing on fleas online today and it said that they can turn in to tapeworms if they are swallowed. Is that true and how much should I be concerned about this? I'm going to take them to my vet on Monday and see about what to do, I'm just worried about that.
Thanks,
Dawnielle

Intro Post

Hello everyone! I'm new to this community and new to owning a bunny. We adopted a 6 month old female dwarf lop about a month ago and got quite a shock 6 days ago when she had babies. Her previous owner had another rabbit in the same cage with her and didn't realise she had a male and female together. She had 6 kits but sadly only one of them survived.

This was taken the day we got her. Our 5 year old daughter named her "Winkle"

And this is her kit, 5 days old.

I've done quite a bit of research already but I want to know as much as I possibly can, so if anyone has any hints/tips/advice/info on rabbit care I'd love to hear it!

Pictures!

I'm a first time bunny owner, I did an intro post a few months ago. Since then I've bought a new camera and I've actually been able to get some good pictures of my boy.

Alex is somewhere around a year old now. He seems so big now, but he's still less then 3lbs which I've heard is about right for a dwarf.

Anywho, on to the

Shhhh, I'm hidding!

Awww, you found me.

I bought him a cat tunnel a few weeks ago, he loves the thing.

Bunny tail! I just had to take a picture of this, he had almost nothing for a tail when I bought him.

"I'm not looking for trouble...honest!"

Paper towel rolls are probably his favorite toy.

"What do you mean I have to go inside my cage to eat the food?"

My pretty boy <3

"I'm trying to relax mom, stop taking pictures of me!"

I think 90% of the time he is looking for trouble :P

I can't decide if he looks shy or scared or what. But I still think this is a super cute picture <3

Mr. Tumnus was feeling bold today and climbed onto the coffee table and took a Keebler chocolate chip & M&M cookie and ran off with it. By the time I caught him under the couch and snatched the cookie away, he'd eaten a good chunk. No M&M's were missing, but he definitely got cookie and prolly some choc chip.

Is he okay or do I need to do something? Is chocolate toxic to buns like it is in dogs?

And, for that matter, what other common, household snacks should a bun never get a hold of?

Hello
I work for a rescue group called SaveABunny in the San Francisco Bay Area
I currently have two fosters one of which I have had for almost a yr.
I am looking for a new foster for Bab's the one I have had for awhile.
I really do not want to give her up but she takes a large portion of a room up as I keep her in an ex-pen and my group currently has a bonneded pair that need to be socialized.
I tend to take the cranky bunnies that others foster don't like to deal with, and though I would love to have 4 fosters I just don't have the space.

Bab's is a very indepenant Rex Diva. She is a fiesty little Bun and does like to grunt and box at you. She has never attacked or bit anyone but likes to show you who is boss. She would need a big area like an ex-pen to live in and have plenty of time to run around. She does well with cats and dogs and she deffiently knows how to old her own. If you are anyone you know in the San Francisco Bay Area would be able to help foster this little bun it would be greatly appreciated. I have no plans to return her back to SaveABunny with out a new foster as she just does not do well in a shelter type situation. This group is run out of a persons home and they let all the bunnies out daily but some of the rabbits just don't do well unless in a quit home.
Here is a link to her infor at SaveABunny. The picture does not do her justice so I plan to post some other pictures later.

Thank You for check her out ^_^

A few have asked, so I've decided to post some pics. These were about the only good ones I could get in before she stomped and grunted at me to put my strange blinky object away (;

we're off to get the new fuzzbutt! wish us luck:D (also, wish us luck with moving this weekend too:P)

So I got another rabbit today. It's a little girl lop called Toboka (pronounced Tob - Oh - Kah), she's about 8 - 10 weeks old and quite timid but hopefully she'll one day be Lola's friend and room mate.

I was lucky to get this close, to be honest. Even if I just take a step outside she runs and stamps her feet but she's explored a little bit and she's got her bowl of hay and I'll be giving her a couple toys so for the next few days she can just relax and settle. She's super cute and very tiny compared to Lola so I'm gonna take the bonding very slowly and carefully.

Lola loves his dog basket :/ And is COMPLETELY disinterested in the chew toys I got him, I might give them to Toboka and find something new for Lo. His dacrocystitis is back, so you might be able to see a bit of a gunky eye in the second picture (its the right eye, jsyk) but he's getting booked to have it flushed and his teeth checked again soon :)

There we are, bit of an update with the bunnies.

So I've had my new bun Bandita for almost 2 weeks now. She seems to be warming up to me a bit and will let me hold her from time to time. So far, I've been letting her run around the hallway 30 min to 3 hours a day, with me sitting alongside for company. Her behavior towards me seems to change on a by the minute basis, but in general she seems somewhat scared of me (as well as everything else). I guess she's just trying to "figure me out" and get used to her new environment. I've looked at a lot of sites about how to raise a happy, independent bunny and many of them seem to indicate you should leave the cage door open so the rabbit can come in and out as she pleases. Bandita will sometimes come out on her own but lately she hasn't and after several hours of leaving the cage door open I'll usually pick her up, pet her, and put her down. Then she will happily play for about an hour or so. My question is: am I allowing her enough time? Space? We have a lot of wires in the house and so I don't want to present her with any health hazards, but I have been thinking about bunny proofing the living room so she can frolic around in there too. We have hardwood floors so I've been so far putting blankets down so she doesn't slip n' slide. I'm not sure how this would work for the living room as it is also hardwood. Should I avoid picking her up out of the cage completely? Also, I can't tell if she likes being held but at the moment she seems to be somewhat afraid of it too (although she'll generally let me hold her / pet her for 10 min. or so before hopping off). I want her to get used to being held and read in many places that if you hold bunnies more and more little by little they'll get used to it. Has this been your experience? Do you know of anything else that might help make her more at ease? Thanks in advance for the advice!!!

Skin lumps?

Does anyone have any links or any ideas about lumps on a rabbits skin?

Fraggle had a hard lump on her thigh which looked like a scab. I scratched at it and the top of the scab part came off to reveal yellowy-white stuff which wasn't like puss, it was more the consistency of dough. I could see pink bits between the 'stalks' of white stuff. It's about the size of my small fingernail.

I'm taking her to the vet next week for a dental anyway, but kind of wanted to be pre-warned about what this might be.

arrgh! it be talk like a pirate day!

Does anyone have any idea's on how to catch a ferrel bunny? See, Hadley can tell when it's bedtime, and I usually have to spend 20 mintues trying to catch her. It should not take that long, I mean, her freerun space is limited to my bedroom, so she only has a few places to go. But then she hides behind her cage, and I have to wait for her to come out, but if I even do so much as look at her, she flees. Is there anything I can do to try and stop this, or just make it eaiser?

Thanks, Jeanne

I got Spawn and originally named her Bun Yee - but when my boyfriend met her he said she didn't fit that name. She was entitled for something much more...suited for her status as the ruler of the universe, something people could definitely identify her with - something more EVIL dun dun duuuuuuun

So, out came Spawn.

Hm. I wonder if I can dig an underground lab.

Bars....Not that they'll hold me down or anything.

Today's News: "Leaders of the world worship Bun?" MUWAHAHAHAHAHA.

Time to scratch behind the ear and look cute for human.
