Bunnies!

Hello everyone!

I'm Krista, I'm considering getting a rabbit. :)

I'm wanting eithier a french lop, Flemish Giant or English lop.    I wouldnt mind maybe a holland or mini lop, though I want the bigger breeds! haha..

Right now I intend on the bunny being a free-run bunny, with a dog crate with food and a bed inside until I can trust him running when i'm not home.  Or doing one of those 'cube' cages.

I just wondered if you guys could point me in the direction of some good breeders for these breeds? I'm in North Carolina, around Charlotte.  I dont mind shipping as long as its not too expensive...
I also had questions on diet and litter training :)
Thanks. :D!

I have a Dwarf, English Lop Eared wonderful bunny. For the past few months we have been battling with an ear infection in both ears. I am in Canada and most vets do not treat exotics. I have a vet who has flushed his ears twice, gave us ear drops and then an oral medication. She seems very nice, and since I have told her that I too would eventually become a vet, she has disclosed more openly the problems, and we have developped an honest communication relationship. (No doctor speak to patient- just doctor speak this is the truth of the matter and take a look at his exrays). Right now, I just want to cure him and make him better- the cost, or the procedure is not an issue.

The methods that have been used were, culture samples, ear drops, oral med, and ear flushing.

Teh culture samples would always come back negative- which makes life difficult because we then cannot get the right medication to kill the infection in one go. The ear drops do not go all the way down to the infection, and the oral has helped immensely but has not gotten rid of the problem. My dilema right now is: The ear flushes helped, but did not heal the problem completely, the eardrum has not been effected, the bunny is happy, strong and healthy in other areas. So this is the time to do what needs to be done before anything spreads.

The vet recently has gotten an email from a specialist somewhere in the states that has given the idea of surgery. This surgery consists of from my understanding opening/reconstruction of the ear hole so there will be more air flow. Apparently this is done with dog's with chronic ear infections. We are aware that if the ear infection does not clear, it will spread like cancer so to be aggressive is needed. The vet just sort of seems to be out of ideas.

Are there any owners or vets out there that knows a treatment, or suggest anything to do?

I would really appreciate experiences, anything really.

Thanks so much-

Bunny owner who just wants her baby to be ok.

bunny drama.

This is just a tid-bit of bunny drama for you folks..
About a year ago, a friend of mine asked me how to rid his sister's rabbit of fleas. I told him he can get Advantage and use it just like he does on his cat. He thanked me, and that was it. I thought nothing of it, until about a week ago. I'd agreed to take this rabbit and his owner, along with my guinea pigs, in for a check-up at Village Vet, a vet practice about 30 minutes from where I live, and the only one within an hour's drive with a doctor that actually knows how to treat exotics, since it is quite a ways and they were planning to get him neutered soon-- hopefully at Village Vet-- and wanted to get him checked out and make sure he was healthy.
Nobody told me he still had fleas.
Whatever zest for life this bunny had a year ago had been completely sucked out of him. This poor guy had no fur from neck to tail; only his underbelly, head and feet were furred. He had fleas EVERYWHERE. It was mortifying to see. When the tech went to pull him out of the cat carrier, his back foot caught on the lip of the carrier and he just laid there. He was pathetic. The doctor told us that he had second-degree infections on his skin, she prescribed oral antibiotics, and antibiotic flea shampoo and Advantage. He also has a molar spur that he needs anesthesia to have trimmed, so they're going to snip him while they're at it to save the cost of a second trip, anesthesia, and a hospital stay. I just went to bring them hay and a bigger travel cage yesterday and they said he's doing much better. I didn't go in to see him, but they've asked me to trim his nails for him [which, when we went to the vet, were severely overgrown] so I'll be seeing him regularly, and they have another check-up with Dr. Roach in about a week. Hopefully nothing like this will happen to the poor guy again.
Now, yes, the family is somewhat at fault for letting their beloved pet deteriorate before their eyes, there's more to it that that. A vet at another hospital, about ten minutes away, who hasn't updated his exotics knowledge since around the mid-1980s, played a hand in all of this. Dr. Rothman, this guy, had been their vet since they acquired the bunny from a school teacher a few years ago. He was also my vet when I had my first bun at age 12 and didn't think twice about taking my girl to this doctor. Since they did, he's had sticky stool/sludge, as did my first bunny. He still has it. Dr. Rothman did nothing about this, much like he did with my bunny. However, he also told this family that there was NOTHING you can do to get fleas off of a rabbit. Nothing. So they trusted him. And this disaster happened. As an aside, they also said that he's never checked Stew's, eyes/ears/teeth, that they'd seen, during his check ups.
So.. yeah. I fucking hate vets who don't know what they're doing. I doubt any of you remember, but I had a tiff with a similar vet a few months ago.

It's been a long time, but photos of my baby (not so much a baby since he turned four years old a week ago now, but still!) are difficult to get! Thus why I took the opportunity to get some pictures this morning:

Bunny Stuff

My roommate, [info]abarero, and I adopted a rabbit last weekend from a student who couldn't keep her anymore (due to dorm rules). She's about a year and a half old and around 5 lbs (mostly fur). We named her Dalek, and we think she's really beautiful.
